When Should You Start Speaking a New Language?

Language learners are often told either to speak from day one or to wait until they have absorbed enough input.

Both positions become too rigid.

You can start production early

Pronunciation, imitation, short answers and useful patterns can begin very early.

That gives your mouth and retrieval system practice without demanding full conversation immediately.

Free conversation is not the only form of speaking

A beginner does not need to improvise complex opinions to begin producing language.

Delay only what is too difficult to be useful

If spontaneous conversation is producing nothing but long pauses and frustration, simplify the task.

Use controlled patterns, personal answers and short role-play instead.

Increase freedom as retrieval improves

Move from imitation to variation, then guided answers, retelling and conversation.

The goal is not early speaking for its own sake. The goal is a smooth transition toward spontaneous production.
